Evan Wise
"I appear to be wiser than he, because I do not fancy I know what I do not know." - Socrates in Plato's Apology
Evan is a recent graduate of Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelors of Science in Physics and Mathematics. He cares passionately about science and mathematics and believes that a more widespread understanding of these sometimes difficult fields is crucial to the future development of our society. Throughout his four and half years at MTSU, Evan worked as private tutor and in a campus sponsored tutoring lab, and, while he was still in high school, he volunteered to tutor ESL (English as a second language) students to help them prepare for the ACT and SAT. The Philosophy of a Tutor
I initially came to tutoring, at least the tutoring I did while in college, looking for a way to make a bit of extra cash. Financial aid only goes so far these days. But I quickly realized that there was more to it than that. In the first place, I found that knowing and communicating what you know are two very different things. Being forced to state problem solving methods explicitly and to translate abstract or difficult concepts into simple language helped deepen and broaden my understanding of my subjects, so I got more than I bargained for out of these initial experiences in tutoring. But soon after that, I came to to the realization that communicating what you know is only a tiny part of teaching it. Explanations can only show you the way, it takes much more than that to walk the path that you have shown them along with a student. In a way, I view my role as tutor to be more about giving the student the tools they need to learn on their own, and perhaps gently prodding them in the right direction. Of course, answering questions and giving guidance is a part of this process, but so too is helping the student develop better study strategies and overcome anxieties related to their work.
This is hard work, but I find the the end result incredibly rewarding. There is nothing quite like the moment when you see a sudden flash of understanding in a student's face. And for me, knowing that I have helped that student is knowing that I have helped advance all of us. Each and every one of us benefits from living in a more educated world. I look forward to helping you become a part it!
